We all know that literacy is one of the strongest predictors of future academic and personal achievement. And yet, many children in poverty miss out on learning these skills at an early age and many never really catch up. The Reading Seed Program in Tucson is dedicated to helping Kindergarten to 5th Grade children in Pima County learn to read, so they can read to learn. Reading Coach volunteers are matched one-on-one with students who are reading below grade level. They meet once a week on school grounds for 30 minutes with each student and at the end of each session the students are given a free book to take home to enable them to build up their own personal library. If you can spare an hour or two a week to invest in the future of our kids, call Jessica Dennes at (520) 882-8006 ext. 291 or email her at JDennes@LiteracyConnects.org.
